English 101 1st Assignment

The first reading began with the book discussing that you must first listen then formulate your own ideas. When writing you should first do research on this topic to establish a good background. This way you can cut out some of the work by seeing what others have said and choose to base your writing off that. You could agree, disagree, or pick and choose from both sides.
Summarizing is another effective use of writing. In this you write in your own words while not using your own ideas or beliefs. In fact, when writing a summary, you might have to use some of the author's ideas and use them as your own even if you don't believe in them. An effective way to do this is using quotes. The best way to portray what an author is trying to say is to directly quote what they said. Keeping flow is important however so you want to try to mesh the authors words into your own to keep fluency. Citation and such is key to keep from plaigerizing.
